Ah, Sgt. Kirkland of the 2nd SC infantry, "The Angel of Marye's Heights" who brought water to wounded Union soldiers stricken on the killing field of Fredericksburg. Sgt. Kirkland was later killed at Chickamauga. The statue is near the site of the Confederate position along sunken road at the base of the heights. Note that the fallen northerner is in his winter greatcoat with detachable cape, but Kirkland is in his regular shell jacket without cold weather clothing.
The statue was erected in 1965.
Excellent Tim!
The point of the post will be revealed on Wednesday.
